Kaneda’s Bike From ‘Akira’ Has An Amazing Toy Re-Released Later This Year

What with the 4K remastering of Akira released last year, we also have a re-release of an excellent Kaneda bike toy on the way. Specifically, this is a re-release of the soul of Popynica toy that originally came out in 2010. More than half a meter in length, it was an impressive toy with lights, sounds and detachable panels to show the mechanics underneath. Simply put, the original toy was an amazing thing for the eye. In addition to the relaunch of the bike, Medicom is also re-releasing its Kaneda figure to scale with the bike. PROMOTE The bad news here is that both the bike and the figure will be quite expensive. With the bike at a price of 59,400 yen (approx. $ 576) and the figure that costs 24,800 yen (approx. $240). That's a lot. However, as someone who picked up the original bike and figure toys in 2010, it is still worth it even with this price increase. Anyway , if you want to get these toys, you have a few months to save as they will premiere in Japan this May and June. W...

Holiday Gift Guide 2020: The Best Fishing Gear

Since March, life has been a little, um, different. Isolation, zoom calls, remote learning for Kids, Scary pandemic news and a crazy-ass presidential election Una one of the few things that has had some semblance of normality for me has been fly fishing. It has been a great escape and a source of optimism (from what I wrote here), and, because of that, I have doubled my interest and participation in the sport. My fishing has been all local, we camped out in Vermont in the spring, and I headed for trout there. Since the summer, we've been back in New York, which has meant chasing striped bass, bluefish and fake white tuna in salt water. I'm not the only one who has leaned hard on fly fishing during this time. In conversations with folks from the fly fishing brands, Orvis and G. Loomis, it's pretty clear that the pandemic has drawn legions of newcomers to the sport and instilled a deeper connection for those of us who were already hooked on it. In that spirit, I thought it w...

New Study Finds These Tropical Fish Can Live To Be Over 80 Years Old

How long do fish live? 10 years? Twenty? Try more than 80 years, according to new research on snappers. Before now, the oldest known snapper was recorded at age 60, two decades younger than the findings recently published in the Journal Coral Reefs. Does this twenty-year age difference matter? According to fisheries scientist and lead author of the study, Dr. Brett Taylor, it matters quite a lot. Snappers serve as an important food source worldwide. Despite the importance of snapper, the global snapper fishery is largely poorly managed. This, combined with the high market value of some snapper species, led the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to officially label red snapper as "at risk" for illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and market fraud in 2015. Marcus Samuelsson’s Quarantine Cooking Hack: Canned Fish

"I have cooked a lot more at home for my family during this pandemic," says Marcus Samuelsson, from his home kitchen, almost seven months after the event that led him to cook more often with his wife and young son, "it has been one of the Silver Linings, spending more time in the kitchen and eating together," adds the award-winning chef Growing up on an island in Sweden, Samuelsson ate seafood four or five days a week, in every way, in every form - fresh, raw, cured, preserved, salted. "Everyone was involved in the seafood trade," he recalls. For him, seafood is personal: it evokes memories of entering his grandmother's house, throwing an apron and cooking some kind of fish. " I have no memories playing with my grandmother. I have memories of eating, memories of cooking, as she tells me about the mortar and pestle hand, touching the dough with her hands, trying to a very specific taste.” Now, Samuelsson can replicate that taste for himself and h...

Social Distancing Is Wearying — For Humans, And Maybe Even For Fish

During this COVID-19 pandemic time, some people claim to thoroughly enjoy the coronavirus avoidance strategy of staying home and alone. If that is not a universal feeling, that may be because, like all primates, humans are social animals. Group life sometimes has worrying costs, such as conflict and even violence, just to begin with. Even so, it has helped ensure the survival of the human species and that of many other primates, too. Living in groups provides protection against predators (we can plot against them and attack them) and against hunger (we can share resources). Living socially facilitates the search for a partner. It allows us to learn from each other. It gives us the pleasure and comfort we experience when a hormonal fever results from a friendly or loving touch. Three chimpanzees seem to be having a meeting. Figaro Café: The Once-Famed Beatnik Café Is Returning To Greenwich Village This Summer

In the heart of Greenwich Village, at the height of the beatnik era in the 1960s, the coffee shop, Le Figaro Café, was the place to be. It was frequented by writers Allan Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, musician Lou Reed, playwright / actor Sam Shepard, who once worked there as a barista when he first arrived in New York, and dozens of people in black berets. But many things fade away and so did Le Figaro Café, which closed in 2008. But now the partners, restaurateur Mario Skaric and lawyer Florence Zabokritsky, backed by some wealthy investors, are reviving it, under a simpler name, Figaro Café. It is expected to open in June or July. Despite the pandemic's crushing effect on tourism in New York, Skaric is optimistic that millennials, babyboomers and diverse New Yorkers will flock to a revitalized European cafe, open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. Try These Seven Wines For A Seven Fishes Feast

We have a tradition of cooking lobster on Christmas Eve. It started a long time ago, when my father changed a Ford Fiero to a lobster he offered to deliver six in December. 24. We usually add a few other fish, but I've never had a classic Seven fish party. However, it is on my wish list. In the meantime, I'm inspired by two of my favorite local food vendors, Fish and the Modern Butcher, who collaborated on creating a fish board with seven options, perfect for an intimate Christmas Eve. It is also not too late, anyone could replicate it at the last minute, using prepared food. As I daydream of one day attending a big party, or at least reuniting with my relatives once again for Christmas celebrations, I asked Andrew Lohse, a CMS certified Sommelier with Colangelo & Partners, for some suggestions for the wines to pair with a seven-course pool meal. Honestly, most of these selections are versatile enough to go with multiple courses, so if your dinner is as small as mine, you ...

King’s Fish House First Northern California Concept In San Jose

With no outdoor dining in San Francisco and around the Bay projected to resume within the next month, it's time to get some new restaurants (those that had quite unfortunately timed openings) on their radar. One such place is King's Fish House San Jose, which is the first Northern California concept of the acclaimed Southern California seafood institution, the King's Seafood Company. The grand opening was well received in October, but had to be temporarily closed due to the increase in the Covid protocol last month. In anticipation of its reopening, let's take a look at what diners can expect from this exclusive seafood restaurant chain. King's Fish House in San Jose's Westfield Valley Fair Mall dining district has some of the freshest seafood, as it comes directly from King's Seafood Distribution. The menu constantly changes depending on what's in season, from California spiny lobster and local Dungeness Live crab; to an oyster selection from its exte...

Do You Like Fishing? $4.3 Million Now Up For Grabs For Amateur Anglers

More than half a century ago, Johnny Morris fell in love with fishing. He grew up frequenting the streams, rivers and lakes of his beloved Missouri Ozarks. He tried to make a living on it, competing for five seasons on the professional bass fishing circuit, starting with a tournament at Table Rock Lake, just outside Branson's vacation and entertainment hotspot. Morris ' aspirations as a bass champion did not materialize, but in the end, he became "good" with his love of fishing. In 1972 he began selling lures and equipment from his father's liquor store, and that small effort is now celebrating its 50th anniversary as Morris's best-known outdoor recreation retail empire: it owns National supermarket chains Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's. He also owns White River Marine Group, which claims to be the world's largest boat manufacturer, with leading brands in several categories including Tracker, Ranger, Nitro, Mako, Tahoe, Regency and Sun Tracker. How A Plane Crash Led To A Franchise Startup

Most people start a new franchise company based on an existing business, while some may have an idea or concept that lends itself to the franchise. It's rare when a franchise like Pilates ProWorks arises out of a business that grew out of a personal situation like a plane crash. It was 1994 and Oscar Sanin was on a single-engine four-passenger plane traveling from Bogota, Colombia when the engine failed. Oscar told of his experience: "the plane landed on a street and then crashed into a house. Fortunately, everyone survived, but my fellow passengers and I suffered serious injuries. After spending two months in the hospital recovering, I undertook a rehabilitation program. After being on the show for a few years, Oscar said he felt better, except that his back began to ache and the pain made it difficult for him to walk. His doctor told him that he most likely needs surgery, but before committing he suggested that Oscar should try Pilates. "Within a week, I was surprised t...

Rock Icon Dion Recalls 1959 Plane Crash That Killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens And The Big Bopper

When I called rock legend Dion DiMucci for an interview recently, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. When he answered the "Me" phone, I thought of his hard-guy roots in the Bronx gangs singing doo-wop at the inclinations. What would he be like? A macho guy like in his hit song, " The Wanderer?" The truth is that Dion is a sensitive and funny person with stories. I mean real stories. Now 79, his memory is sharp and vivid. For an hour and a half, we discussed his experienced career. Who in real life is Runaround Sue, The Wanderer? What does Dion think about the invasion of British rock in the early sixties? What do you remember about Del Shannon? How does it feel like the guy who says he gave his seat to Ritchie Valens when that plane crashed killing Valens, JP "The Big Bopper" Richardson and Buddy Holly en route to their next gig in Fargo, ND , in February. 3, 1959? Below is the first part of a series of edited interview excerpts that answer all those...

The Indonesian Tycoons Behind Lion Air, Whose Plane Crashed Off Jakarta on Monday

On Monday morning, a Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX 8 plunged into the sea 13 minutes after takeoff from the capital Jakarta with 189 people on board. So far 24 body bags have been taken to a hospital in East Jakarta. The budget airline's Chief Executive, Edward Sirait, told Indonesian media that the plane had had a technical problem on a previous flight, but was later repaired and was reported to be ready to fly. Lion Air announced in a press release that it had flown 168 affected family members to Jakarta, and some arrived at the hospital for Victim Identification. After Swiss Plane Crash And Duckboat Disaster, Time To Remove Relics From Service?

On Sunday, news flashed across the Internet about a crash of a Swiss Junkers Ju-52 plane, killing 20 passengers and crew. Still sleepy, I assumed it was a 50-year anniversary story of some sort. After all, the JU-52 was the main transport aircraft of the German Luftwaffe in World War II. Who could be flying 75-year-old obsolete aircraft commercially? But no, the tragic news was new and true. A Junkers Ju-52 tri-engine (propeller, of course) flying between Locarno in southern Switzerland, to Dübendorf, a suburb of Zurich, crashed in the Swiss Alps on Saturday, August 4. The plane, which witnesses said sank down, was found at an altitude of about 8,300 feet above sea level. None of the 17 passengers and three crew members on board survived. This accident, which resulted in the death of 20 people, is quite terrible. But like the 75-year-old former military duck that sank in Missouri last month, the latest disaster raises questions about why a 79-year-old plane built by the Germans du...

Halladay Survived Plane Crash -- Could Boaters Have Saved His Life?

An autopsy on Roy Halladay, the retired Major League Baseball star who died last fall in the crash of his light sports plane, shows that the former athlete survived the accident in the Gulf of Mexico and died from drowning and blunt force trauma, according to an autopsy report. That Halladay, 41, did not die on impact but lived long enough for him to drown should prompt a reflection on the behaviour of boaters who arrived at the scene with cameras rolling but did not appear to have investigated whether the plane's pilot could have been rescued. The video shows that at least three ships were very close to the barely submerged plane some time before the Coast Guard arrived. A video shot by one of the boaters just before the crash, Halladay's plane is seen maneuvering at low altitude before it hits the water. The alarmed men then accelerate to the scene. How Many Plane Crashes Have There Ever Been?

Approximately, how many air accidents do you estimate, according to some statistics, have there been in total? it originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world. Response from Tom Farrier, former Director of safety at the Air Transport Association, on Quora: Approximately, how many air accidents do you estimate, according to some statistics, have there been in total? If you are interested in every type of aircraft you have ever flown, this is an incredibly difficult question to answer. I don't think anyone can try without doing a lot of research. No one in government even bothered to track such things until the first systems of air regulations began to develop in the 1920s, and even in that there was little interest in formally documenting and investigating every accident until prominent people began to die in them . The best data I can offer is for commercial jet aircraft accidents, which...

Boeing Wins Key Endorsement From Ryanair With Its Largest 737 MAX Order Since Deadly Crashes

Boeing has signed off on its first major 737 MAX sale since a pair of fatal crashes that have connected the plane since March 2019, with Irish low-cost airline Ryanair agreeing to buy 75 of the 8-200 variant on Tuesday, weeks after the Federal Aviation Administration granted approval for the planes to return to service. [ + ] AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES KEY FACTS Ryanair will add these 75 planes to the 135 MAX jets it previously ordered between 2014 and 2018, none of which has yet been delivered according to Boeing figures. Ryanair did not disclose the cost of the planes, but said in a statement that Boeing agreed to a "modest reduction" in price, estimating the total value of its 210 MAX orders at more than $ 22 billion (analysts believe the airline probably negotiated a significant discount). All-Electric Plane Crash Lands In Blow To Norway's Aviation Strategy

A big question mark hangs over Norway's desire to pursue electric aircraft after an all-electric two-seater plane was forced to crash into a lake earlier this week. The aircraft, owned by the Norwegian airport operator Avinor, was being used to showcase the opportunities of electric power in aviation. Norwegian media have published photos showing the plane half submerged in water. Avinor CEO Dag Falk-Petersen was piloting the plane, along with Secretary of State Aase Marthe J. Horrigmo. He was also not injured in the incident. The plane took off from Arendal Airport, about 285 km (177 miles) southwest of the Norwegian capital, Oslo. Falk-Petersen estimated that they were traveling at a speed of about 70 km / h (43 mph) when they hit the water. Boeing’s CEO Was Fired And May Walk Away With $58.5 Million After Two Plane Crashes Killed 346 Passengers

After two air crashes that killed more than 300 passengers, an aborted mission to the International Space Station and a recalcitrant attitude, Dennis Muilenburg, the CEO of Boeing, was fired on Monday. Boeing initially boasted that its 737 MAX jet was the fastest-selling aircraft in its history, with nearly 5,000 orders from more than 100 customers worldwide. The hype did not live up to expectations and the reality was the loss of life. The first accident occurred in 2018. Data collected from the plane's black box revealed that the pilots had trouble snatching control of the aircraft's automatic safety system. There were reports of the first crash that raised questions about the aircraft's confusing new software and lack of proper pilot training. The company's haste to bring the plane to market and a regulatory agency that allowed Boeing too much leeway was questioned. Concerns were put aside and a second accident occurred, killing hundreds of passengers. Only then did...
